How to obtain the Compostela in 2025

To obtain the Compostela, pilgrims must have fulfilled three basic conditions:

  • make the Way for religious or spiritual reasons,
  • have covered at least 100 km on foot or on horseback and 200 km by bicycle on one of these routes
  • and prove that this distance has been covered.

In 2025, Santiago Cathedral decided to slightly modify the requirements, making the section pilgrims had to cover less restrictive. While until now pilgrims receiving the Compostela had to cover the 100 (on foot) or 200 kilometers (by bike) just before arriving in Santiago, they can now do so on any other section, provided that the last stage is the arrival in Santiago.
In the case of starting the Camino outside Spain on one of the official Caminos, the Cathedral sets the number of kilometers the pilgrim must cover in Spain at 70 km.
