Equipment and budget

Weight is the enemy! “Ne prends point grand charge, allez sur le léger”, as the Pilgrim’s Guide said nine centuries ago. Whether in France or Spain, you’ll always be able to find what you’re looking for, whether in terms of clothing or your personal pharmacy.

If you walk light, you’ll be able to enjoy your journey with peace of mind. Eliminate all the essentials you can do without, and pack only the essentials you’ll need on your walk. It all depends on the route you’re taking.

In France, the daily budget is around €50, a little less in Spain.

There are supermarkets in almost every place, as well as bars and restaurants. You’ll be able to cook, or picnic, knowing that prices are cheaper in Spain than in France. In France, you can also opt for the ” pilgrim’s menu ” offered by a growing number of establishments on presentation of your credencial, and in Spain for the “menu del peregrino” or the “menu del dia”; starter, main course, dessert, agua or vino drink and bread included.

If you can, don’t allow too little time. The idea is not to run or perform, but to go at your own pace. The road is long and unforeseen events are frequent. It’s also a good idea to spend a few days in Compostela before you return.

It takes between 60 and 90 days to cover the route from Tours, Vézelay, Le Puy and Arles to Santiago de Compostela.

Nowadays, there are so many accommodation options that you can choose your own stages and mileage. Even if an average of 25 km per day is recommended, you’re under no obligation to stick to it, at the risk of straining your muscles or suffering other problems. Please note that this is an average! Nothing prevents you from doing fewer or more kilometers.
