Beyond Santiago

Since the end of the 14th century, pilgrims to Santiago de Compostela have gladly continued their journey to the coast:

  • in Padrón, they were shown the place where Santiago had preached, where the boat carrying his body had landed, and the rock that had softened under its weight
  • at Cape Finisterre, they were shown the footprint of Christ, the seat carved into the rock where the Virgin Mary, Saint John, Saint James and Saint Peter would have sat, and the tomb of Saint Guillaume (Saint-Guilhem-du-Désert).
  • in Muxía, they were shown the stone boat in which the Virgin had arrived, and whose mast, some 25 m long, could only be moved by sin-free pilgrims. (The Muxía shrine burned down on Christmas Eve 2013, but was rebuilt and reopened in 2016).
