Société Française des Amis de Saint-Jacques de Compostelle La plus ancienne de toutes les associations jacquaires – depuis 1950

Getting ready

Going it alone?

An understandably recurring question. The vast majority of those who have set off in this way answer “Yes”. Right from the start, at the blessing of the pilgrims, along the way, you’ll find a pilgrim who will follow in your footsteps, which is very important, and who will be as delighted as you are by this encounter.

On the contrary, it’s hard to stay on your own when you’re so busy! Don’t forget your sticks if you come across an aggressive dog, but above all to take the weight off your pack (and therefore your back, ankles and knees).

La credencial

The credencial is the pilgrim’s passport. Created in 1958 on the initiative of the Société Française des Amis de Saint-Jacques de Compostelle (French Society of Friends of Santiago de Compostela) and the Chapter of Santiago Cathedral, the credencial allows pilgrims access to accommodation and, on arrival in Santiago, to obtain the Compostela.

In 2016, the credencial issued by the Société Française des Amis de Saint-Jacques de Compostelle was brought into line with the Chapter’s wishes regarding its content. It is handed over personally to the future pilgrim along with the “pilgrim’s file” and various documents useful for the peregrination at the welcome desk.

To mark the company’s 70th anniversary, a special 70th anniversary credencial was created.

The Pilgrim dossier

The Pilgrim’s Kit (60 pages) is given to every member of our association and to all those who come to collect the credencial, which is only given to them personally.

Knowing the art and history of pilgrimage enriches the journey, gives it meaning and enables us to go beyond the tourist trip.

In this guide, you’ll find many answers to the questions you may have, as well as a wealth of advice designed to help you prepare for your peregrination in the best possible conditions. For those accustomed to walking, some tips may seem superfluous, but for others, they’ll be useful.
