Practical tips

Walking the Camino de Santiago and Compostela research, and pilgrimage to Santiago (on foot or by bicycle) are enjoying a spectacular revival. The number of pilgrims on the roads is increasing year on year. Not all of today’s walkers are pilgrims, but they love walking.

Given the influx of pilgrims in France, it may be advisable at certain times to book lodgings the day before in major towns or stages: Le Puy-en-Velay, Vézelay, Conques, Cahors… In Spain, there are no reservations: “first come, first served”. You may find yourself queuing outside the albergue, waiting for it to open its doors later in the afternoon.

Pilgrims are entitled to help and comfort along the way, but they also have obligations towards their hosts. He must not forget that he is only passing through, and that those who welcome him have received other pilgrims before him… and will receive many more to come. An amazing sense of brotherhood develops along the way, and lasting friendships are forged between pilgrims, between “passers-by” and “hosts”.

The tourist demands, the pilgrim thanks.
