Depending on the itinerary you have chosen, we will provide you with a list of places to stay in France and Spain: gîtes, chambres d’hôtes, small, inexpensive hotels, campsites, tourist offices… We make every effort to keep this list up to date, but changes may occur.

Today, there are so many hostels and refuges for pilgrims in France and Spain that you’ll have no trouble finding accommodation. At worst, on presentation of your credencial – if there’s no presbytery, the town hall will always put a room at your disposal. Alternatively, your local hospital or shopkeepers will be able to give you the addresses of individuals who can put you up.

Associations, parishes and municipalities have set up shelters reserved for pilgrims. You can only stop there for one night, except in exceptional cases (injury, illness…), on presentation of your credencial. In Spain and France – with the exception of the Puy-en-Velay route – there are no reservations in pilgrim hostels. Pilgrims on foot have priority over those on bicycles.

You’ll be able to find donativo gîtes, or gîtes offering free accommodation. Note that this type of accommodation is a sign of hospitality and generosity towards pilgrims undertaking a long journey. However, donativo is not synonymous with gratuity, but rather with “to each according to his means”: by hosting you, your hosts incur expenses which you are welcome to share, and which may help other pilgrims.
