Who we are

The Société Française des Amis de Saint-Jacques de Compostelle© (Association Loi 1901) was founded in July 1950 by Jean Babelon, Louis Bourbon, Georges Gaillard and Jeanne Vielliard. They were later joined by René de La Coste-Messelière. Historians, art historians and archivists, they all loved Santiago, Compostela and Spain, and many had made the pilgrimage themselves.
Thanks to meticulous work, the association has recreated the traditional pilgrimage routes in France. At the request of pilgrims who had been arrested in Spain as vagabonds, in 1958, in agreement with the authorities of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, it created the credencial or “pilgrim’s passport”.
