Hymn to the Apostle Saint James
Anyone who has attended the impressive “botafumeiro” censer ceremony in Compostela Cathedral will have heard the hymn to the apostle Saint James that accompanies the ceremony. The hymn was composed in 1920 by M.Soler, choirmaster at the cathedral. Here are the lyrics, in Spanish and French
¡Defiende a tus discípulos queridos! ¡Protege a tu nación! ¡Protege a tu nación! | Saint commander, patron saint of Spain, Friend of the Lord: Defend your dear disciples, Protect your nation. The victorious weapons of the Christian We come to dip In the sacred fire Of your revered altar. Firm and solid, Like the column That the mother of Jesus entrusted to you, Will be in Spain The holy Christian faith That you bequeathed to us. Glory to Santiago, Famous patron! Your grateful children Bless you today. Prostrate at your feet we offer you The warm gift of our love. Defend your dear disciples! Protect your nation! Protect your nation! |

Organization of the Jeanine Warcollier Prize
On the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Société Française des Amis de Saint-Jacques de Compostelle, the members of the Board of Directors would like to honor their predecessors, including Madame Jeannine Warcollier, who throughout her life defended the values of the Pilgrim’s Way to Santiago in France and Europe.
Jeannine Warcollier was General Secretary of the Société des Amis de Saint-Jacques in Paris from 1958 until her death in April 2016. She was instrumental in the creation of numerous associations jacquaires in France, but also in Belgium, Germany and even Spain. In Santiago de Compostela, a room at the Pilgrims’ Welcome Office bears her name.
To pay tribute to her work, the Société française des Amis de Saint-Jacques de Compostelle has created the Prix Jeannine Warcollier, to be awarded to a French or foreign pilgrimage association whose work on behalf of pilgrims, the Pilgrim’s Way to Santiago and the pilgrimage to Compostela is particularly noteworthy.
Associations have until December 31, 2021 to submit their applications.
